Leeds based Guitar Teacher
I teach guitar, ensemble and composition. I have a 100% pass rate for exams. I am fully DBS checked.
Welcome to the guitar tutoring section of my website.
A large part of my work is done online via Skype or Zoom, meaning I can teach people all around the world. Feel free to get in touch wherever you are.
In person, I teach privately out of the Chapel in Leeds - a beautiful, converted church and creative hub bringing together artists, musicians and producers from around the city. Perfectly situated close to the local communities of Meanwood, Kirkstall, West Park and the whole of Leeds. I teach freelance within schools such as Robert Ogden (National Autistic Society) and frequently run ensembles on behalf of Rock School UK. I also run guitar skills and ensemble groups at Leeds Junior Conservatoire.
My teaching room is supplied with studio monitors, recording equipment, access to Logic Pro X, two amplifiers as well as spare guitars and ukuleles. This makes it an ideal space to teach composition as I am able to help students record and work on ideas they have.
I teach all ages and abilities, albeit one-on-one, group sessions or ensembles, the latter helping students understand the disciplines of playing together. I specialise in rock, pop, indie, folk, funk, blues and all their subgenres. I also teach theory.
The first thing we will establish together is what you want to get out of the lessons.
First and foremost, I aim to ensure my lessons are fun and enjoyable. Music should be an escape, not a stress. However, serious musical ambition requires hard work, determination and focus. If you’re hoping to achieve more than simply acquiring what many say to be a highlight of their week, such as working towards grades or career goals, then the lessons will be more focused and rigorous while remaining fun and enjoyable.
I hope to use my skills and industry experience to inspire and help students achieve their goals, helping them realise their full potential and understand the joys that learning an instrument can bring.

Testimonials
“Huw is a very thorough tutor. In the 6 months we have had lessons I have seen a great improvement in my guitar skills. I have gained confidence in playing bar chords and trying difficult pieces which I haven’t been able to do with other tutors. Even when busy, he is still super flexible and will always help work around your schedule! Huw is very professional and a great tutor.”
“My daughter has loved having electric guitar lessons via Zoom with Huw over the past two years. He is a fabulous teacher; he is patient, extremely knowledgeable and his lessons are always so well planned and structured. He is clearly very passionate about music and this is evident in his lessons and teaching style. With Huw’s support and guidance, my daughter was delighted to achieve her Grade 8 in electric guitar with a Distinction, at age 14! Thank you so much Huw.”
“Huw has been working with 2 of my students for over a year now here at Robert Ogden School in Barnsley. They are 17- and 18- year-olds who are diagnosed with autism and have some learning difficulties. They initially started the sessions to gain a new skill as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award but enjoyed their time with Huw so much that they have carried on. Huw is excellent with both students who are very different. He is patient and considerate to their individual needs and has developed really good professional relationships during their guitar sessions. The students have progressed so well over such a short time and are even practising at home to impress their families as well. I would highly recommend Huw taking students for guitar lessons any day. Thanks again.”
“Huw is a fantastic teacher, very patient, very flexible and with great technical skills and knowledge of the instrument. He’s highly inspiring both as a musician and teacher and knows exactly the right pace to work at that makes me feel comfortable. I would recommend him to anyone.”
“Huw built a good rapport straight away with my 11 yr old son. He is patient and encouraging which is just what children need to build their confidence in an instrument. In my son’s own words ‘Huw is a very good guitar teacher, he’s nice, good at explaining things and can see what you’re doing wrong quite quickly.’ It’s lovely to see my son enjoying his guitar again.”
“Thanks Huw for another good lesson - patient and knowledgable, appreciate it!”
“Huw is a very talented and patient teacher. My son was a complete beginner in ukulele and now he is very confident, ready to take his Grade 2 exams, just in 6 months time. Huw is a professional with fun teaching style and tailors lessons to my son’s musical tastes. He also helps my son in composing music for his school Music lessons. He is very approachable, has a lot of experience in teaching music and getting the best out of pupils. Soon my son will be starting Guitar lessons with Huw. Would highly recommend Huw to anyone even if they want to learn music from scratch.”
“Huw is very well organised and passionate guitar teacher. Huw has helped my daughter for over 2 years with lessons now and she has gone on to successfully pass multiple grades during that period. He sets measurable and tangible goals for the student and ensure successful completion using careful planning and repetition. It is a great pleasure to work with him. Thanks for all the support.”
“Thanks for your understanding and patience whilst I learn new songs to play. I think that you are also knowledgeable and talented.”

“Huw has been teaching my son for more than a year now and he’s making really good progress. Recently the lessons are online but they seem to work really well, just as good my son says!”
“Huw is a great teacher and makes lessons very enjoyable and relaxing. He’s excellent at seeing where you can make progress and incorporating small bits of theory into what you’re learning. I find it very manageable and I’ve previously struggled a lot with theory. In the few months he’s been my tutor I’ve seen a lot of progress, particularly in my ability to improvise.”
“Huw is a very friendly and experienced teacher who makes lessons fun and engaging for our son. He also has great theory knowledge that he imparts in an easily accessible way for his students. We definitely recommend Huw.”
